In inventing modern political science, Machiavelli challenged the time-honoured preconceptions of Christendom, and Christendom was slow to absorb the shock. At first, his major works were banned and his name became a term of abuse. Only after a long and anxious dialogue was he accepted into our thinking: a dialogue between his disturbing ideas and the inescapable events of two centuries.
